A Report on Guest Lecture on Hydraulic Hybrids
The Guest Lecture under the SAE Eminent Speaker Series on Hydraulic Hybrids was successfully organized on 19th April 2011 at The Automotive Research Association of India which witnessed an enthusiastic response and participation from practicing engineers, scholars and students in the discipline of engineering. Hybrid Technology being one of the promising and popular fields in Automotive Engineering, SAEINDIA Western Section felt a lecture on “Hydraulic Hybrids” will be a very relevant subject to the beloved members.
The speaker for the Session was Benjamin Hoxie, Chief Engineer, Hybrid Power Systems Division, EATON. He held responsible positions for pump/motor development, system integration, program management, and engineering leadership.
Benjamin Hoxie initiated the talk with the nuances of Hydraulic Hybrids Technology and Hybrid Electric Technology. The functioning of the basic configurations of the Hybrids, i.e., Series and parallel Hybrids formed a refresher for the talk on advanced Hydraulic Hybrid Technology.
He highlighted on the following:
- Hydraulic pump/motor technologies, axial piston pumps etc.
- Accumulator technologies which are having high efficiency energy storage systems.
- Controls system-Communication between the power train and HLA system through the vehicle’ CAN bus.
Further, he explained the Eaton Hydraulic Launch AssistTM (HLA) System, and the benefits of using the same. Mr. Benjamin Hoxie explained on the Architecture configuration and the principles of operation of the Series Hydraulic Hybrid System (SHHS) .
The gathering of around 20 at the seminar constituted practicing engineers at automotive companies, professors, and researchers. The guest lecture saw a good response from the Faculties of engineering colleges in and around Pune.
